Jobe Hariss touches the skies of Croyde Bay

Jobe Harriss: looking good

The 19th Jesus Surf Classic was surfed in a great atmosphere and with some quality rides at Putsborough. Croyde Bay once again was the base for this long running and very successful event organised by Christian Surfers UK.

Conditions for the eight categories started off on Saturday morning with a stiff onshore wind and sets of around 2ft – 3ft, with showers and a few bright spells. However as predicted the swell grew considerably, so twin peaks were run throughout the day.

Nick Williams (Voice of the UK Pro Tour) also shared his amazing story of surviving a shark attack in South Africa just two days after he got married. A truly miraculous story.

Sunday the contest was moved to the more sheltered option of Putsborough. The remaining six heats were greeted with 5-6ft clean waves with very few out, and the remainder of the event was wrapped up in great conditions, with some solid surfing from all involved, both UK based and travelling Aussies.

Canadian Surf Film Festival: movies for all tastes

More than 20 surf movies will be showcased in the 2nd annual Canadian Surf Film Festival (CSFF), from September 29th to October 1st, in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

There will be regular length features and shorts about surf culture as it relates to communities and traditions all over the world, from as near as Halifax to as far off as rural Indonesia.

"We’re really excited about this year’s line-up. In our second year, we’re bringing eight Canadian premieres," says Development Director, Keith Maddison. "And we’ve got filmmakers and surfers from across North America joining us to present many of these films. We can’t wait to bring this program to our community, not just the surf community. The line-up touches everything from environmental conservation to mental health issues, and from anthropology to indie art filmmaking."

The secrets of surfing till you’re 95

Tuesday, September 13th, 2011

Pedro Martins de Lima: surf legend

Is it possible to surf when I'm 95 years old? When will I stop surfing waves? How can I paddle with 80 years old? Will I be able to duck dive when I'm 70? How big are the waves I can catch at 65?

Fortunately, all questions have enthusiastic answers. Yes, surfing is possible until the last day of our lives. Roy Earnest has written a very interesting article for "Healthy Aging" magazine. In "Surfing for Life", recalls the 'baby boom' and 'surfing boom' of the 60's to tell us that the first surfing generation is still alive and riding waves.

Surfers have moved with their lives. The career, the house loan, wife and kids, the long dinners with friends, the diseases. It all happens through time. Some have kept catching waves, at least in weekends. Meanwhile, longboards returned to the surf shops and the euphoria returned.

"It should no longer be a surprise when a surfer is over age 40 or 50, and yet, it does surprise many – mostly non-surfers. The growing number of surfers over 50 jolts many people’s view of what older people 'should do,' and that jolt gets stronger as surfers get older", writes Earnest, who is also a gerontologist.

Yadin Nicol: chasing luck

John John Florence will be replacing Yadin Nicol on the new ASP Top 34, after an broken right fibula sustained in Japan while free-surfing in late August. The Australian surfer is sad but he is looking forward to watch the Hawaiian partying hard.

"I have been so close to qualifying in the past, and know how stoked I would have been if someone would have given up their spot for me due to injury," Nicol said. "By no means am I happy on being hurt. I worked my ass off for years to get to this point, but at least until I'm ready to get back into it I'll be able to get a lot more excitement out of the webcasts with John John (Florence) being there. He's going to be fun to watch!"

While early prospects have Nicol out of the water for three-to-four months, the ASP have promised the young Australian a wildcard in the season-ending Billabong Pipeline Masters should he be healthy enough to surf at that time.

Shane Dorian: is this big enough?

Mikala Jones, Alana Blanchard, Stephen Koehne, Ross Williams, Sean Moody and Shane Dorian are the "Icons of Aloha", Reef’s most influential ambassadors, either native to Hawaii, California or Australia, who have all left their indelible mark on the North Shore of Oahu.

The campaign pay tribute to iconic surfers who have humbly garnered the respect of the Hawaiian community and earned their spot in the line-up at the notorious, and often times treacherous, surf breaks of the North Shore. Watch the video teaser, here.

“Hawaii has a lot of talented surfers, I’m honored to be a part of this campaign and stoked to be a part of the Reef family”, says Mikala Jones.
